Issue 99

Nine months ago, healthcare enterprises were scrambling to install and scale up Telehealth and virtual care infrastructures. Today, we are in the midst of a similar crisis – how to scale up and streamline the vaccine distribution effort (my daughter, a healthcare worker in Boston who is approved for a vaccine, has been unable to secure an appointment on any of the authorized sites). While limited vaccine availability is a primary cause for the slow roll out, the IT infrastructure for accepting and scheduling vaccination requests has become a nightmare.

We include several pieces this week that lay out the challenge in front of us and how CIOs and healthcare startups are stepping up to meet the challenge.

Much has been made of the shift to virtual care, especially telehealth and remote monitoring programs. The key to a long-term shift lies in the payment models. While providers seem to prefer a backslide to fee-for-service, regional insurers are pushing forward with virtual-first plans. The key to telehealth payment reform may now be with individual states.

Life sciences companies are stepping up their digital health efforts. We include this piece on a collaboration initiative by European firms and the top strategic priorities for Pharma in 2021.

My latest podcast guest is Ray Lowe, SVP and Chief Information Officer at AltaMed Health Services. Take a listen.

Have a great week.
