Monday, September 14, 2020In a recent Power Panel survey with Modern Healthcare, CEOs shared how they are using tech to change the way they engage with consumers in the midst of COVID-19. I share my thoughts on how healthcare is going to feel like a “drive-through” experience. The COVID-19 disruption has been an opportunity for cybercriminals. This past week, data breaches at a software company, Blackbaud, which helps hospitals with fund-raising from donors and patients, was at the center of security incidents involving personal data on tens of thousands of donors at Northshore Health System and Inova Health System. The incidents took place earlier in the year (during the initial peak of the pandemic). The software company made ransomware payments to regain access to impacted systems and obtain an assurance for the destruction of the stolen records. (One might be wondering why so much personal data on hospital patients is sitting in 3rd party servers belonging to a company not involved in care delivery). A separate research report points to an increased level of cyberattacks against telehealth vendors during the same period. Chicago Tribune Inova Health System hit by breach at software vendor that affects 1 million Inova Health System in Falls Church, Va., is the latest health system to notify patients and donors that some of their personal data may have been exposed in a ransomware attack at software company Blackbaud. Modern Healthcare Targeted cyberattacks on telehealth vendors skyrocketed along with adoption, report finds According to a new report from cybersecurity ratings firm SecurityScorecard and dark web research company DarkOwl, as telehealth usage surged, so did targeted cyberattacks on telehealth providers. The analysis was done on security alerts sent to IT staff at 148 of the most popular telehealth applications and found they jumped 30% for the period March through April this year compared to period between Sept- Feb 2019.
