May 18, 2020 My pick of the week is this moving CBS TV program titled Bravery and Hope which takes a look at 7 days inside the operations of the Montefiore Health System in New York. Located in the Bronx, Montefiore has had the highest number of COVID-19 cases in New York. It’s a must-watch. Contact tracing has provided us a ray of hope in the fight against the spread of COVID-19. While contact tracing has been effective in several countries in Asia, it’s yet to catch on here in the U.S. Part of it has to do with privacy concerns around the sharing of location data, especially in the case of the much publicized Apple-Google collaboration (which health officials say is practically useless). At the other end of the spectrum, many startups are taking a run at building contact tracing apps. In the meantime, the demand for contact tracers is ballooning and is estimated at 200,000 and growing. Read this piece by an aspiring contact tracer on taking an online course to become one.
