The future isn’t here, but it’s uneven for sure in healthcare.

May 11, 2020

My reading pick of the week is a blog that went viral (no pun intended) by a biology professor in UMass at Dartmouth that explains the spread of coronavirus in a remarkably lucid manner. As businesses and institutions press forward with reopening plans, the blog is a practical guide to consumers and workers who maybe exposed to the risks of infection.

How exactly will the current pandemic impact the different segments in healthcare? This piece in The Economist that does a pretty good job of breaking down the impact of COVID-19 on the healthcare economy and what to expect in the coming quarters. Even within segments, the winners and losers aren’t entirely clear yet. There’s only one word for what we are seeing: unprecedented.

Haven Healthcare’s CEO Atul Gawande’s impending departure, after a troubled period involving lawsuits over senior leadership hires, is a reminder to startups and non-traditional players of the challenges involved in “disrupting” healthcare.

In my latest podcast episode, Seth Hain and Dr. Sam Butler of Epic discuss how emerging technologies like video visits will become an integral part of healthcare in the future. They believe that in future, a physician’s schedule would be 50% face-to-face and 50% non-face-to-face visits through video, telephone, and an asynchronous electronic visit back and forth. Take a listen.

Stay safe.
