The end of the beginning?

April 27, 2020

The subject line this week is a nod to Winston Churchill’s assessment of an early British victory in WW2. The war would go on for another four years.

My favorite read this week is this long-form piece by Bill Gates that summarizes the scientific efforts to find a vaccine for COVID-19, and what a return to normal life might look like.

Health systems, dealing with the double-whammy of increased costs of COVID-19 response and the loss of revenue from elective procedures, are looking down the barrel of financial distress and furloughs. The $100 billion set aside in the first round of relief under the CARES Act is barely enough for 1 week of lost revenues. The CMS has issued guidelines for a careful, phased return to normal healthcare operations.

Google announced the release of its long-awaited Cloud Healthcare API. I sat down with Amit Zavery and Aashima Gupta from Google Cloud in my latest podcast episode to talk about the API and a range of other topics. Take a listen.

Stay safe.
