February 10, 2020 All the attention for digital transformation initiatives in healthcare seem to be focused on digital front doors, AI, and the emerging tech that transforms patient experiences. The technology enablers for creating these engaging experiences deserve mention too. In my recent article in Healthcare IT News, I discuss how the API-led transformation of healthcare IT is unlocking data and accelerating innovation. The debate around providing access to patient data took an interesting turn last week as it emerged that some 60 hospitals had voiced their formal support for Epic’s objections to the proposed HHS rulings. Many commentators took this as an implicit disagreement with Epic by the remaining 4900 or so hospitals in the country, or the “silent majority.” I argue in my article that there is ample opportunity to innovate with the existing access, which is indeed what many health systems and digital health startups have been doing for the past few years.
