November 18, 2019

We are very pleased to welcome Edward Marx and John Glaser to our inaugural advisory board. Read the announcement.

In my latest podcast episode, Steve Miff, CEO of the Parkland Center for Clinical Innovation (PCCI), a spin-off from Parkland Hospitals in Dallas, discusses how they have deployed advanced machine learning algorithms to understand the role of social determinants of health and serve vulnerable communities.

PCCI operates with the assumption that health begins “where we live, work, play, and pray.’ Steve discusses the success they have had in improving the lives of their communities and reducing the costs of care through their machine learning-based approach. He highlights the importance of a robust data management and infrastructure environment for success with predictive and prescriptive analytics in healthcare.

Last week, the media erupted in a huge kerfuffle over the WSJ’s report on Google’s partnership with Ascension Health which handed Google access to personal medical information on millions of Ascension’s patients – without their consent – leading to a federal probe of the transaction. We have featured a handful of pieces – including one from an anonymous whistleblower who is a Google employee working on this project – that provide an all-round perspective on the issues at stake. My personal take: regardless of the legality of a transaction, public perception of wrongdoing can be hard to overcome.
