Breaking the Bottleneck: Making Big Data and Predictive Analytics Work in Healthcare

Damo Consulting and Sutter Health Share Strategies and Experiences at Predictive Analytics World in San Francisco April 5

Big data and predictive analytics have the potential to improve healthcare, save lives and lower costs; however, harnessing the power of data and analytics has proved challenging for the healthcare industry. At the Predictive Analytics World conference this week, leaders from Damo Consulting and Sutter Health will share insights on common bottlenecks in the use of big data in healthcare—specifically access to and analysis of data in near real-time, and the integration of analytics into every day care practice.

Paddy Padmanabhan, CEO of Damo Consulting, a leading consultancy for healthcare enterprises and technology firms, and Josh Liberman, Ph.D., executive director of Research, Development, & Dissemination (RD&D) for Sutter Health, will discuss how big data and predictive analytics can support transitions in care, specifically efforts to reduce 30-day readmissions. Proactively identifying patients with the greatest risk of readmission and delivering personalized care to prevent an unnecessary hospital visit is a backbone of population health management.

“Successful use of big data and predictive analytics is challenging in any care setting because of multiple factors including data interoperability, complex protocols designed for reactive rather than proactive care services, and the potential for disruption of well-established clinical workflows,” says Dr. Liberman.

“Today, big data analytics programs in healthcare are looking for value creation, and this can happen only if analytics is operationalized into clinical workflows,” adds Padmanabhan.

Through a case study underway at Sutter Health, the presentation will offer practical, real-world solutions to the common obstacles experienced by healthcare providers trying to use big data and predictive analytics to reduce 30-day readmissions for population health management. The presentation will help audiences:
1.    Learn about the big data bottlenecks in healthcare
2.    Learn how Sutter Health uses its electronic health record data in a readmission risk predictive model
3.    See how Sutter Health integrates the predictive model into its clinical operations to improve care

“Our providers work hard to understand and meet the needs of our patients. Predictive analytics can help, but only when delivered to the right team, at the right time, and in the right way —seamlessly driving the best care services for a patient and caregiver,” says Dr. Liberman.
